Fiat is a leading brand in many world markets, with a range of small, affordable, fuel-efficient cars. However, the U.S. gets a smaller lineup than most countries: It’s limited to the 500X subcompact crossover, 500L tall station wagon, and 124 Spider two-seat roadster. The brand is part of the broader Fiat-Chrysler automotive alliance whose brands also include Jeep, Dodge, and Ram, as well as fellow Italians Alfa Romeo and Maserati.

After a 27-year hiatus from the U.S. market, Fiat resumed sales here in 2012 with the tiny 500 hatchback; however, that globally successful model didn’t take off with American consumers, and Fiat dropped it from the U.S. lineup this year. Like the more-established Mini brand, Fiat emphasizes small, light, cheerful cars with retro Italian designs. And its vehicles cost less than the near-luxury Mini models.

Fiat models feature funky trim level names that emphasize the vehicles’ lively Italian flavor. Names include Pop (the base model on the 500X and 500L), Trekking (a better-equipped model with a slight off-road design theme), and Lounge (the 500L’s luxury model). The 124 includes the base Classica, more stylish Urbana, fanciest Lusso (Italian for luxury), and the higher-performance Abarth.
