Mercedes names its vehicles using a letter to identify their size — generally, the subcompact A, the compact B and C,, the mid-size E, and the full-siz,e S. Sedans’ names start with those letters, while crossovers start with GL (GLB, GLS) and two four-door coupes start with CL (CLA, CLS). Model names like E-Class cover a range of vehicle engines, such as the base four-cylinder E 350, mid-level six-cylinder E 450, and max-performance AMG E 53 and AMG E 63.

Since its inception its chassis remains based on the same platform as the E-class and with the intention of delivering coupe-like styling but with four doors. Operating on a 48-volt electrical system allows unique features such as seamless start/stop functionality and electric ancillary engine components that draw less on the engine making for better gas mileage and power output.
